地鎮祭を英語で…

日本で地鎮祭に出た記憶はありませんが、通訳や翻訳をしていると、たまに遭遇する言葉です。

いつも使う用語辞典ではceremony for sanctifying groundと出てきますが、ネットではさらにShinto ceremony of purifying a building siteとか単にground-breaking ceremonyとかも見られます。

個人的にはシンプルにShinto style ground-breaking ceremonyでいいと思います。

Shinto神道？と聞かれたらIt’s an indigenous religion of Japan くらいでいいでしょうし、敷地をpurifyする為、程度で十分かと。

追記）通訳案内士向けの解説書では "Jichinsai is a Shinto ceremony of land purification. This ceremony precedes construction projects in order to appease the deities that may reside at the site. The purification helps to insure that the construction will be safe and successful." （出典：「新・英語で語る日本事情」江口裕之, ダニエル・ドゥーマス ）
